Although most colleges and universities highly discourage transfers from one college or university to another, it still is inevitable that students decide to transfer to another college or university or worse, quit somewhere in the middle of the program. There is hope for these students though, as some schools offering graduate programs in Nursing that accept some transfer credits or courses taken from another school. The downside though, is that the student is compelled to look into the policies of these colleges or universities as they usually do not provide enough information through their website.

Transfer Eligibility

To be eligible to transfer, students usually need to have completed at least one year of college coursework. This means that in programs like the one at UVA, nursing transfer students are only accepted into the second year of the nursing program. At UCLA, students must have completed 60 to 70-semester units of coursework that can be transferred to the university. Current Georgetown students must have completed an entire academic year before they can transfer into the School of Nursing and Health Studies there.

Transfer Procedure

In order for the course(s) taken at another school to be considered the syllabus for such course, an official transcript with course grade, and a written request must be submitted to the Office of Academic Affairs. This request must be submitted prior to the first semester the student is enrolled at the School of Nursing. The Associate Dean of Academics will review the materials and forward eligible requests to the faculty responsible for the course. Advanced standing is granted at the discretion of the faculty.
